Illinois Science Olympiad
The Illinois State Science Olympiad Tournament is currently scheduled for Saturday, April 10 and 17, 2021.  Our hope is that it will be a satellite tournament (all students will compete from their home high school) but it will be a mini SO if needed.

Parking
Huff Hall (Headquarters and Registration)
  • The parking lot on the east side of Huff Hall is "ticket and tow" before 5 pm. Do NOT park there before 5 PM exactly. After 5 pm, parking in this lot is free.
  • There is metered parking along the horseshoe drive by Huff Hall which is on the east side of 4th avenue. All 5 metered spots are bagged (free) for headquarters staff.  2 of the spaces will be marked for Registration parking.  These spots will be 10 minute only and require flashers.  Please spend as little time as possible in these spots.

Campus Parking
  • Parking is available from 5:00 pm Friday through Saturday evening in most University of Illinois parking lots labeled "Monday through Friday."
  • Parking is NOT permitted in any University lot or specific parking spaces marked "rented 24 hours, 7 days a week."
  • Street parking meters supplied by the cities of Champaign and Urbana are not considered University parking and will be strictly enforced on Saturday.
  • Huff overflow parking is available in lot E14.

Bus Parking
  • All Buses should park in the State Farm Center (Assembly Hall) - E14.
  • Buses of any size found in the Huff parking lot will be asked to move or towed.

Concessions/Food for Students/Volunteers
BIF:  Espresso Royale will be open 8 am - 6pm
Illini Union Food Court (lower level of Illini Union)
Concessions will be available in Huff Gym from 10am - 5pm
  • Hot Dogs, Brats, Bottled Beverages, Nachos, Popcorn, Pretzels, Assorted Candy, Caramel Corn, Dippin Dot’s, and will most likely have donuts for the first part of the day​ on Saturday

Huff Gym
Please do NOT walk on the uncovered wood floors in Huff.  UIUC has completely remodeled the Huff Gym.  In order for ISO to continue using the facility, we MUST remain on the COVERED areas of the floor.

WIFI
All buildings with IllinoisNet will have IllinoisNetSTart which will allow for visitor access.
Guest and Visitor access to IllinoisNet wireless
We provide free public WiFi for guests. Follow these simple steps to get online:
  1. Select IllinoisNet_Start as the network to connect to.
  2. Open a web browser (e.g. Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer).
  3. Click Visitor Access from the menu on the left.
  4. Provide relevant information (name, country calling code, mobile number, email address). Find your country calling code.
  5. Click Generate Account.
Your username and password will pop up on the screen and will be emailed to you.
IllinoisNet_Start is like public WiFi at a coffee shop: it’s public. You’re sharing it with a bunch of other people. As such, we recommend that you wait until you get home to do any sensitive work like banking or entering important passwords.
Your access expires after 24 hours. Be sure to follow these steps every day you want to get online

Team Management
Team Rosters and Forms
All team members must have a medical release, media release permission form, and coaches must provide a roster for each team competing. A Principal's signature is required at the bottom of each roster submitted.​ Please alphabetize your forms and divide them into 2 separate piles-one for Medical Release Forms and one for Media Release Forms. We will be checking these against your team roster(s).

​​Wristbands
As you check in, our volunteers will count out the designated amount of wristbands for your team. Please do not leave the check in table until you do this. Students without wristbands will not be admitted to their events. For events with an impound, anyone on the team with a wrist band may impound the apparatus.  This includes competitors, coaches and alternates. Please read the Wristband directives that you will find in your registration packet at check-in.

Homerooms
Homeroom numbers will be listed on your registration packet. Please do not switch homerooms as we will need to know where everyone is should any issues arise throughout the day.  Your school will be responsible for any fees incurred due to improper usage or cleanup in the room.

Rosters and Alternates
  • C teams can have up to 7 seniors on their roster
  • B teams can have up to 5 9th graders on their roster as long as those 9th graders attended the school in 8th grade
  • Division B and C teams can bring up to 12 alternates to the state tournament.  Alternates will receive a wristband and will be eligible to compete in the trial events.
  • Trial events - students with a team or alternate wristband can compete
  • State Events - only students with a team wristband can compete

The students should go around on Friday and find their event rooms so that they do not get lost on Saturday.  It is a big campus, so they should stay in small groups with a chaperone.​

Awards Ceremony
Awards Ceremony in Huff Hall
If your school will NOT be attending the Awards Ceremony, please let us know by Friday. Teams attending the awards ceremony are expected to stay for the entirety of the ceremony.

FAQs, Event Clarifications & Related Information
In addition to the National Science Olympiad FAQs and Rules Clarifications, please note the following Illinois-specific information:

Ceiling Height
The ceiling height at the center of the Armory is 95 ft.  This venue will be used for Elastic Launched Glider, Wright Stuff, and Ping Pong Parachute.

Sounds of Music (C) Clarification
To measure frequencies at the Illinois State Tournament, Sounds of Music will be using the 
official tuner from the National Science Olympiad website in conjunction with a Blue Snowball microphone (USB microphone).  In the interest of fairness to all competitors, no alternative tuners/tuning apps will be used if this tuner does not pick up the intended frequency.  Before the competition, please ensure your device’s tones can be measured with the official tuner in conjunction with a USB microphone.  


Other Notes
UIUC is an open and unsecured campus.  Anyone can come and go on campus.  Coaches need to keep an eye on their students.  Students should NOT go wandering off by themselves.

Personal Belongings
Please ask students to leave all personal belongings in the homeroom. Students who bring personal belongings to an event will be asked to place all belongings at the front (or back) of the event room.

Cell Phones in Events
Cell phones MUST be turned off and put inside a personal belonging that is left at the front (or back) of the room. Phones may NOT be kept on a student during an event. Students found with cell phones may be asked to leave the event.​

Results
Tournament Results will be made available at Avogadro within 24 hours after the tournament has concluded (pending finalization of results).

Participating Teams & A/AA Divisions
This information will be available after all regional competitions have been held and A/AA determinations have been made.

Flight Practice Time (Armory):  
​All teams must wear approved eye protection for practice according to the rules.  Those not wearing eye protection will be asked to leave the area until proper eye protection is found.
  • Friday April 17 (5pm - 9 pm), The flight area is under the direction of Chuck Markos, State Event Supervisor.  Open flying is allowed under controlled conditions by the State Flight crew.
  • Saturday April 18  (before 8 am),  Restricted practice, Competitors only. Parents and coaches may only help bring in the aircraft and tools and then leave.
  • Saturday April 18  (after 8 am), Practice flights only allowed with permission from the Event Supervisor. 

Flight Competition Notes:
  • No communication is allowed between competitors in the competition area with anyone outside of the competition area.
  • All Elastic Launch Glider teams must bring and wear approved eye protection for practice according to the rules.

Wheeled Events Practice Time (Huff Hall):  
  • NO practicing on the Huff Gym floor on Friday or Saturday.  As part of our agreement with the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Illinois, there will be NO practice runs allowed on the Huff Gymnasium floor either Friday or Saturday.
  • Teams may practice wheeled events in the hallways of Huff Gym, but not on the gymnasium floor.​

  • Coaches, please complete the Volunteer Form so we can identify your volunteer in our system and link them with your team.
  • The Primary Volunteer for a team MUST pick a 4-hour slot listed in the Events-Concepts, Process & Inquiry category.  Your primary volunteer is not permitted to pick an Engineering & Application or Other Opportunities events until ALL of the Concepts, Process & Inquiry events are filled.
  • Any additional volunteers associated with your team may choose a slot in any category listed.

Please check in at Tournament HQ:  Huff 114
  • Friday, April 17th:  1-5 pm and 7-9 pm (for volunteers with a 6:30am shift on Saturday ONLY - others will be asked to return on Saturday morning)
  • Saturday, April 18th:  6-9 am (for volunteers with a shift after 6:30am)

Other Notes
  • Please sign in 20 minutes before your scheduled start time to allow enough time to get to your event.
  • Once you check in, you will be given your T-shirt (which you must wear while volunteering) and specific volunteer instructions.
  • You will be asked to sign a volunteer Code of Conduct form.

Your Role as a Volunteer
  • Events that are concepts, process, and inquiry would require you to assist the event supervisor proctor and scoring the event (answer keys are provided!)
  • Events that are engineering and application would require you to help with measurements, timing, checking students in, and score keeping
  • You do NOT need to prepare or bring any materials
  • You MUST check-in 20 minutes prior to your event time on Saturday at Registration/Headquarters
  • You will receive a Team ISO tournament T-Shirt (at check-in).  This shirt is your identifier and must be worn while you are volunteering.
